The paper sculpture project I just started with my Intro to 2D kids just took on a whole new life. They are now going to make three versions of the same image, reinterpreted to imitate various artistic styles throughout history. I am going to give them mini art history lessons in the next few weeks, and have been working on my own reinterpretations. So here is what I started with…

Then I decided to go with post-impressionism, with an emphasis on pointilism. Since it is a paper sculpture, this means that I cut out about a million tiny circles. I started by covering the background (notice how the circles slowly get bigger and bigger?? haha.)

Then I started on the seahorse and some seaweed..

So. Many. Circles. This is only 4″x4″ though, so it’s not so bad. I still have LOTS of seaweed to do, and then bubbles and a few other details… I’ll show you once it’s finished, as well as student examples. I gave them lots of freedom in terms of subject matter, so it’s going to be interesting to see what they come up with.

Hope you’re having a good weekend! =)

My Intro to 2D class is going to start a paper sculpture project later this week, & I thought I’d share the example I made here. I decided to make a seahorse and I put him in an underwater scene (seaweed, bubbles, starfish, and a school of fish all included!)

My Intro to 2D class is going to start a paper sculpture project later this week, & I thought I’d share the example I made here. I decided to make a seahorse and I put him in an underwater scene (seaweed, bubbles, starfish, and a school of fish all included!)

Hope you have a great week! =)

Do you like it?? It took FOREVER and then I didn’t even end up turning it in (it was for a class) but I still really like it. Here are a few more seahorse pictures I found…

And a gorgeous print from Etsy…

(paper moth)

I remember when I was little researching how to take care of them cause I wanted some of my own, but it’s really complicated (they need the current in the water to be regulated… or something. I don’t remember.) Maybe someday?!
